Customer Spotlight: Lynsey & Dan

17th Dec, 2019

Sometimes people find their dream home entirely by accident. You just never know what happy surprises life can bring, and at Scotia we love all those feel-good stories of people finding their dream new build home and letting their design tastes really flourish.

In this new Customer Spotlight we hear from Lynsey and Dan Mills, who continue to inspire us with beautiful interior design touches on their @HomeOnTheBrae Instagram page. Here’s the story of a newly married couple who discovered our Dubford, Bridge of Don development in Aberdeen and have truly made their new house a home...

Customer Spotlight: Lynsey & Dan

We’re Lynsey and Dan and we moved into Scotia's Dubford development in January 2019. Dan is from England – moving north in 2012 for work and this led us to meet in Aberdeen.

We’ve now been married for almost 4 years and after the wedding we decided that it was time to hunt for our first proper home together. We first visited the development to look at a private rental property, but we loved the area and the homes so much that we decided to buy our own instead!

Lynsey is a Bridge of Don girl and so coming back to this area was an easy decision to make. We had been living in the West End of Aberdeen, which we both really loved but we were looking for a home with plenty of space, a close-knit community and nearby spots for walking, and the Dubford development had all of that in abundance.

Making a Statement

We have similar tastes when it comes to home décor (which is certainly handy!). The house is so beautifully made – with high ceilings and spacious rooms – that they almost speak for themselves, but we have started putting our stamp on the place.

We’ve very much stuck with a neutral base but love to add statement pieces of furniture or pops of colour/print to create a bit of interest. We’ve just finished the entrance which we’ve kept quite classic; it’s a nod to the Victorian style of the house. The kitchen is our current project; it’s a simple white kitchen with a wood effect top, so we’ve added some beautiful bright printed tiles which will add some personality!

Inside and Out

Our favourite thing about the house is the gorgeous high ceilings and big windows. We couldn’t find anything like it in any other new builds and so it was a huge selling point for us. The rooms are all such a good size and that added height makes them feel even bigger. There are also just little corners throughout the house that really does make it feel like a traditional build, without the need to renovate – we don’t have the patience for that!

There were really a few key things that we deemed to be essential when picking our home and this one came up trumps! We wanted a big kitchen that we could entertain in and spacious rooms throughout the house. The nearby shops and the Scotstown Moor nature reserve on our doorstep were also big ticks on the checklist.

Dan’s ‘make-or-break’, however, was the garden. We love to be outside and it was important that we had space to get out and BBQ when the sun is shining. Our garden gets the sun all day and it’s been an amazing little escape for us during lockdown.

Personal Touches

We felt an instant love for the house but it really felt like home when we decorated the living room. We have an open living room/main stairway – the heart of our home – and we wanted to add some more of that Victorian character, so we had a chimney breast and shelving units built, adding a decorative fireplace. We’re so pleased with how it turned out and having somewhere to place our photos/memories has made it so much homelier.

We’ve never been very “DIY” and usually prefer to leave the work to the professionals, so lockdown has slowed down some of the progress we were keen to make as we couldn’t have people in the house. However, we have done a bit of painting and odd jobs ourselves – and we’re not as bad as we thought! Lynsey even fitted the skirting boards in the utility room and downstairs toilet herself which is a great new skill to have. There is plenty more that we want to do to the house but we’re taking our time and enjoying the process.
